Hey class of 2018, this blog post is for you! I know moving to a new place and transitioning to a different environment can be difficult at times. However, always remember that you are not alone in starting your college career here; there are thousands of students adjusting to college life with you. Here’s a list of five nifty Honors opportunities to keep in mind as a newly inducted member of the CHC community. We truly look forward to you joining us here! An early welcome to your new home away from home—UMass!

1.       Pizza & Prof: These happen on most Tuesday nights in CHC Events Hall. If you like free food and casual chats with faculty members, you should stop by. You’ll be getting information about these through the weekly CHC newsletter as they happen. Be sure to read the weekly CHC newsletter sent to you every Sunday via your UMass Gmail account!

2.       Weekly Wednesday Workshop: Similar to Pizza & Prof, these are held on Wednesdays and usually include some kind of food as well as professional development support. Past professional development topics have included: resume building, degrees and certificates, and study abroad. What’s not to love a free food and exchange of knowledge?

3.       CHC Faculty Lecture Series:  Both UMass and guest faculty speak regularly in lecture series around campus. The Honors Faculty Lecture, held once per semester features some of the best and brightest faculty members as they relate what interest them most to the Honors Seminar 201, “Ideas that Changed the World.” If you’re taking Honors 201 this semester, you’ll probably be required to attend the lecture – but if you’re not, I encourage you to check it out. CHC also hosts the Social Through and Political Economy (STPEC) Lecture Series in CHC Events Hall. This fall, three professors will give lectures, including one on the globalization of the American university. The lecture topics are interesting and there is always opportunity to learn something new!

4.       Student Advisory Board: This group of honors students meets with the Dean twice a month to talk about ways to improve our CHC experience. If you are interested in sharing your opinions about CHC and have ideas for improvement, this is an excellent leadership opportunity for you to work with a group of likeminded individuals! (Oh, and there’s pizza too).

5.       Stay Connected: I hope you’ve already liked your Class of 2018 page, but please like the Commonwealth Honors College page, too.  We use it to keep you informed about all things related to CHC and UMass. Don’t be a stranger!

Thank you for reading! We hope that you’ll come back and read more soon! Honors students like you write on the Honors InSight blog to inform current students about their opportunities and to encourage prospective students to come to UMass. If you are interested in writing a post for the blog, we encourage and accept writing on topics related to student life at UMass – just email me at communications@honors.umass.edu and I’ll get back to you with some guidelines.

Lastly, follow us on Twitter and stay up to date with what’s happening on campus @UMassCHC.

I think that’s all for now. Comment to let us know what you are looking forward to the most about CHC and UMass!
