My memory of Fall NSO at UMass is a blur of running around campus, playing ice breaker games to learn the names of strangers, and spending every spare minute unpacking and rearranging my dorm room. It was a really busy three days. But even with all that chaos, I have a great memory of stopping for a doughnut with my new friends at Glazed Doughnut Shop in Amherst.
Glazed was the first restaurant I went to in town and since then, I have returned many, many times. Glazed is not an ordinary bakery. The doughnuts, which are all homemade, are available in flavors like maple bacon, salted caramel and chocolate, chai glazed, and peanut butter and banana. There’s also a great selection of gluten free and vegan doughnuts, plus an old fashioned soda fountain and great coffee, too.Though I tend to order the more classic flavors like chocolate and vanilla glazed, the next time I stop in I want to try the cookie dough doughnut, which has a thin layer of real cookie dough on top.
The prices here are higher than they are at Dunkin Donuts, but it's absolutely worth it to make a trip to Glazed. It's a short 5-10 minute bus ride into Amherst center, or a 20-25 minute walk if the weather is nice. But be prepared to eat a lot. Though my friends and I often stop in with the intention of "just splitting a doughnut," more often than not, we leave with a box.
