• Ryan’s Question: Do you feel at “home” at college? Would you say many people feel this way? Amberly’s Answer: The other day during winter break, when I was talking to a friend, I told her that I was “going home” next week. Noticing her confused look I realized I had referred to UMass, not my small hometown of Sherborn, Massachusetts, as home. So I guess, really, that that answers your first question. It took a while before I reached this point, though. As I wrote in my previous blog post, reality hit me this past semester in a way it hadn’t for the others. I came to the... Read More
  • Kate, So you got into the Honors College – remember when you said you wanted to walk down an entirely different path than me? Just kidding, nursing is an entire world apart from political science and legal studies. Besides, I can’t blame you for wanting a chance at the beautiful honors dorms and to write a thesis. In all honesty, I’m very excited for you and very proud. Once again, you’ve done good kid.   What’s next? You’ve already texted me this morning asking where the CHC Events Hall is, so I’m guessing you have an information/orientation meeting of sorts coming up?... Read More

  • When I got my letter from UMass in December of my senior year of high school, I remember reading the first sentence that said I was accepted, and then not reading any further. I was just so glad I had gotten in that I had failed to notice, in the next paragraph of that letter, that I had also been accepted into the Commonwealth Honors College (CHC).   It wasn’t even until the next day that my mom pointed it out to me. I was so excited and proud that my application had stood out enough that I had not only been accepted to the university, but to its prestigious honors... Read More
  • It is official: enrollment for spring classes is approaching. Signing up for classes is absolutely my favorite time of year. It makes me more excited than Christmas or birthdays and the best part is that it even comes twice a year. The excitement I get is a little strange, okay very strange, but there is just something remarkable about getting to start fresh in the new semester with new professors and classes.   It always seems strange to have to plan out your schedule for January when we haven’t even made it to Thanksgiving break yet, but I have found it to be worth the... • My name is Avery Hennigar, and I am a Public Health and Psychology double major graduating in 2015. I am also a member of the Citizen Scholars Program, a Spinning instructor at the Rec Center, and a new Commonwealth Honors College Communications Assistant.   Since coming to UMass Amherst, I know I have had times where my head is full of questions about my major, my requirements, and the best way to get involved on campus. If you are a first year student, or even in your third year at UMass like me, you may still not know the best place to get your questions answered—UMass... Read More
  • My sister, a senior in high school and a prospective UMass Amherst student, visited me at the University over Homecoming Weekend.  As I got off the elevator on the 23rd floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois library to show her the incredible view of campus it offers, I was reminded of the many informational sessions I hosted over the summer for prospective students.   This past summer, I worked as a Peer Ambassador for Commonwealth Honors College.  In addition to performing reception duties, I met with prospective students and their families to provide them with an overview of CHC... • As promised, I will recount the hike I went on with my friends this weekend.  Since last semester, we have been talking about going on a hike together, but this past weekend it finally happened because most of us were free on Sunday morning! We decided to go to the Mount Holyoke State Park Range because it’s known for its amazing views of the area and it is only twenty-five minutes away from campus. I remembered hiking one of the trails on the Mount Holyoke State Park Range last year during Welcome Weekend Orientation which has since been expanded and is now... Read More
