• This past weekend UMass Amherst celebrated Homecoming, and it was one packed full of events. From open houses and luncheons to the blacklight dance, the MinuteFan Tailgate and the Homecoming Parade, and, of course, the UMass versus Villanova football game and UMass vs. Boston College hockey game, it was a difficult to find time to do it all! But this being my senior year, I did my very best to attend at least some of the activities.   So, what was the highlight of this action-packed weekend?  For me, I’d have to say the Homecoming football game and tailgate.   As much as I... • UMass Amherst does have a homecoming every year, but this year, it’s expanding!  Fellow students are most looking forward to the MinuteFan Tailgate at the Coca-Cola Pavilion, the Homecoming Parade, and, of course, the UMass versus Villanova football game, although there are many more activities planned, such as open houses and a dance!  The parade will be the first in recent years and will weave through the south side of campus from the Mullins Center area into the tailgating area of the stadium just in time for kickoff of the football game.  As always, the Minuteman... •   A couple times a semester the English Society hosts a Coffee House at the University Club, which happens to be the oldest house in Amherst.  Not only is there coffee (also brownies and cookies that are SO good) but also poetry, short fiction, and acoustic music.   I went to the first Coffee House of the year last week.  I’m the worst procrastinator ever, and creative writing unfortunately doesn’t often make it to the top of my list. I like to go to the coffee houses anyway, even though I don’t often have anything to read, because I like going and watching people... Read More
  • As promised, I will recount the hike I went on with my friends this weekend.  Since last semester, we have been talking about going on a hike together, but this past weekend it finally happened because most of us were free on Sunday morning! We decided to go to the Mount Holyoke State Park Range because it’s known for its amazing views of the area and it is only twenty-five minutes away from campus. I remembered hiking one of the trails on the Mount Holyoke State Park Range last year during Welcome Weekend Orientation which has since been expanded and is now... Read More
  •   This week one of my classes welcomed a guest presenter from the UMass Amherst International Programs Office to discuss various study abroad options and study abroad scholarships.  They enthusiastically help students determine what study abroad program is a good fit and help them apply for scholarships, like the Boren Award for International Study, the various scholarships their office provides, and plenty of others!  I promise you they are incredibly friendly and dedicated :) I work for that office in the summer as a staff member for International Student Orientation.... • This past Monday in the Student Union Ballroom, Commonwealth Honors College hosted the second installment of this semester’s Faculty Lecture Series.  Lynn Margulis, a professor in the geoscience department here at UMass, was the speaker, and her talk was about symbiogenesis and the big blobs that grow at Puffer’s Pond in the summer (you can find a more in depth summary of the lecture here).  Definitely intriguing, but, for me, probably not as immediately intriguing as, say, a lecture about the complete works of Jane Austen.     You guessed it: I’m an English major.  I... • Over Columbus Day weekend, I went for a beautiful, relaxing bike ride using one of the new UMass Bike Share Program bikes with my boyfriend, who helps run the program as Secretary of Sustainability for the Student Government Association (SGA).  We easily connected to the Norwottuck Rail Trail from campus.  The Norwottuck Rail Trail is a level 11-mile path linking Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst by utilizing the former Boston & Main Railroad right-of-way.     The Bike Share Program is a free bike rental service for UMass Amherst students, faculty, and staff.  The...
