"It is a piece of history that links to my ancestors and the history of my tribe”- Jasmine Goodspeed '19

While some may have heard of King Phillips War, less have heard about Deer Island which would become the grave for hundreds of Native Americans interned there. Jasmine Goodspeed ’19, a Commonwealth Honors College scholar, made it the mission of her Honors Thesis to tell this tragic story and to provide a new style of narrative to shared history. Rather than confining her research to a paper, she brought the story to life and into the public eye through her self-written and produced musical 1675. Goodspeed, who majors in theater and English, transferred to UMass Amherst from Greenfield Community College via the Honors-to-Honors program. In creating her thesis work, Jasmine was driven by her interest in art, history, and her childhood passion for theater.
