On Friday, May 12, Commonwealth Honors College hosts its Celebration of Excellence for senior honors scholars and their families. The processional starts at 1:15 p.m. for a 1:30 p.m. ceremony in the Mullins Center.
Commonwealth Honors College Dean Gretchen Gerzina will begin the celebration with a welcome address, followed by greetings from University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy and Provost Katherine Newman. Senior Katherine Stolerman, legal studies major and sociology minor, will address her fellow graduates. As a member of the Honors College, Katherine will share her experiences of completing her program in just three years—with guidance from advisors, the support of peers, and the encouragement of friends.
As part of the ceremony, each graduating senior will be called to the stage where they will be congratulated by Dean Gerzina, the dean of their school/college, and other distinguished administrators. A gold stole will be presented to each graduate. The stole not only signifies the value of honors students' achievements, but also distinguishes graduates as Commonwealth Honors College scholars.
Following the Celebration of Excellence, Commonwealth Honors College scholars will join their peers from the Class of 2017 at UMass Amherst's Commencement at 4:30 p.m. in McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
