On March 28, 2017, students and alumni at UMass Amherst gathered to discuss legal studies, law, careers, and post-graduation options.
Students and alumni munched on sandwiches and vegetables while they talked. When discussing careers and graduate school options with students, alumni Colin Black ('93) advised: "'The notion that to be happy, one must first become successful is a misconception. You must first find happiness and only then can success be attained."
Students chatted and reflected on their experiences. "This was a great event that helped me with my networking and skills, and answered a lot of questions that I had about the legal field and what's it's like to be a lawyer," senior Florence Neale said.
At the event, senior Katherine Stolerman shared information about the Legal Studies Undergraduate Board. Katherine, a founding member of LSUB, explained, "LSUB is dedicated to maintaining active engagement with faculty and providing students with the opportunity to interact with each other beyond the traditional classroom setting. We organize coffee hours with professors, offer help with course registration and finding internships, participate in hiring new faculty in the department, and participate in events like Meet the Law."
Katherine mentioned, "We are currently organizing another alumni event, this time for legal studies alumni who went on to pursue careers outside of going to law school, to be held on Thursday, April 27. This is a chance for students to mingle with legal studies alumni who pursued careers outside of a traditional legal setting. The format of the event will be very similar to Meet the Law, in that we will employ a speed-dating style of networking."
