Four Commonwealth Honors College students have each been awarded a prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship for their exceptional achievements in the STEM fields. This highly-competitive, national award recognizes college sophomores and juniors pursuing research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
It is extremely rare for all four student nominees, as nominated by UMass Amherst's Office of National Scholarship Advisement (ONSA), to each receive a Goldwater, as was the case this year. Out of the pool of the estimated 5,000 students who applied, the 2019 Goldwater Scholarship winners from UMass Amherst are:
Caleb Carr ’20, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Computer Science
Career Goal: Ph.D. in Computational Biology
Kenneth Lin ’20, Astronomy, Physics
Career Goal: Ph.D. in Physics
Kwan Yoon ’20, Chemical Engineering
Career Goal: Ph.D. in Biomolecular Engineering
Zoe Kearney ’20, Astronomy, Physics
