You know how 2016 was a royal mess and how some people had hope that 2017 would make up for it? Well, it’s not looking too promising so far. Illness has befallen my family and, now that I’ve noticed it, maladies seem to be spreading throughout the country like a vicious rumor. Everyone in my family has had, or will soon have, surgery and everyone around me seems either to have the flu or be in a cast or sling. The thing is that, just like the flu, three mental states travel as fast as the news can: Fear,... Read More
Hello and welcome back to UMass, folks! Some of you might have returned after reluctant and teary partings with family, some may have sprinted out of their homes to get here. Whatever the circumstances, I hope that you feel relieved and excited to be back. A lot of you will already have found your niches and are eager to return to your friends and activities that make UMass a part of your extended family. For those of you who are taking a bit longer, as I did, never fear! Each semester is like starting all over... Read More
Tis the season to be stressed and contemplating a career in flipping burgers or manning coffee shops. Most of us have at least one class that looms over us like the angel of death. It’s that one class that we’re convinced will destroy our GPAs and thus our future. That class stares at us like a hungry lion that wants nothing more than to drag us back to their den from which we will never see the light of day or a decent paycheck. Or at least that’s what the world is telling us to think. The fact of the matter... Read More
Memory's a funny thing. It’s entirely subjective, prone to corruption, and infamous for these failings, yet we depend upon it for, well, everything. Everyone’s had that quarrel with their parents or friend where one party says that Doug leaned on the big red button while the other party says that Maxwell clipped the wrong wire. Either way, things went *boom* and all that’s left is the results and finding who to blame. I mean, look at some of the students here on a Saturday morning! I heard someone say that... Read More
It's almost Thanksgiving break, and not a moment too soon! I am so, so ready for a whole week off to sleep in, catch up on everything I've fallen behind in, and eat lots and lots of food.  When I get busy, I tend to get super scattered and absent-minded, so I've had more than a few funny bumps in the road this semester. Last week I was sitting on the couch when a Google Calendar notification popped up on my phone that I'd completely forgotten about. "I'm supposed to be at the Campus Center in five minutes!" I... Kate, It’s finally here: election day and cold and flu season. What a one, two punch combination to start the beginning of the end of the semester. Are you staying positive? I know that it isn’t always easy. So that’s what I wanted to talk about today. Taking care of yourself. To be honest this is more of a how to not let the semester kill you than a take care of the whole person and put your health first letter. We’ll sleep when we’re dead, right? First and foremost, fingers crossed that after tonight election... Read More
You’ve probably heard half a million singers and poets say that they’d die for their significant other. Thing is, with some rare exceptions, there’s almost never a need to catch a grenade for someone or otherwise jeopardize your safety, no matter what Bruno Mars says. Between watching my parents and analyzing my own failings in my short-lived relationships, I’ve finally realized that love and romance in general aren’t about big, life-changing moments. There aren’t going to be many times when your boyfriend loses... Read More
Two years ago, I had a paper that just wasn't coming together. I would write a page or so, delete it, write a new page, delete it, and so on. With the deadline looming, I decided to try out the Writing Center in the library for last-minute help pulling this paper together.  The writing tutor I met with was super helpful. Before anything, she asked me to read the paper aloud to her. It sounds so simple, but taking a moment to slow down and read what I had written a little more carefully really helped me. Then, we... Happy almost Halloween! We've gotten into the holiday spirit at my apartment, with pumpkins, twinkling ghost lights, and plans to make ghost and bat-shaped cookies this weekend. Although I'm practically counting down the days until the annual steak and lobster dinner, I've also been trying to make some of my favorite fall recipes while I still have the chance. How is it already the end of October?  The semester is flying by and I'm getting closer and closer to leaving for study abroad in Montpellier, France! This... Read More
If you haven’t noticed, my father’s kind of a history geek. Must be where I get it from. Anyhow, we were talking about how much of a circus this presidential election is and he mentioned a concept that a man named Joseph Goebbels came up with in the ‘30s.

Pretty much the idea is that if you lie copiously and vary the lies every time, then the fact-checkers can’t keep up.

Something we might’ve noticed from climate change deniers and rumors about My Chemical Romance getting back together is... Read More
