“People who love to eat are always the best people.”--Julia Child.   Want to make some new friends?   Just add a few people, a dash of freshman year jitters, and a package of Oreos, and mix together in a first-year common room with an unreliable oven. At least, that’s what worked for Emily, Sarah, Alicia and I. It was September 2014, and like most freshmen, I hadn’t found a solid group of friends just yet. I wandered into the common room to find Alicia, Sarah and Emily pressing Oreo cookies into a pan of brownie... Read More

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a student-run organization committed to developing leadership, honoring diversity, recognizing achievement, as well as stimulating engagement and involvement among students who reside in the residence halls. I was deeply involved in presenting the Community, and what it would be, to the media, parents and the students who would inhabit it. Only through getting to know our exceptionally qualified staff did I begin to fully understand the immense impact having a centralized... Read More
When I got my letter from UMass in December of my senior year of high school, I remember reading the first sentence that said I was accepted, and then not reading any further. I was just so glad I had gotten in that I had failed to notice, in the next paragraph of that letter, that I had also been accepted into the Commonwealth Honors College (CHC).   It wasn’t even until the next day that my mom pointed it out to me. I was so excited and proud that my application had stood out enough that I had not only been... Read More
November 5th marked the official groundbreaking for the new Honors Residential Complex, which is slated to open in the fall of 2013. I was lucky enough to be on the speakers list at Saturday’s event, where campus leaders like CHC’s own Dean Clarkson and Chancellor Holub other including UMass Trustees, alumni and President Robert Caret spoke about what the new Residential Complex meant to them and to the Honors Community. About 70 others joined in the celebration and watched as we geared up with hard hats and... Read More
