Citizen Scholars Program

The Citizen Scholars Program is a two-year, academic service learning program that connects real experiences in the community to coursework, bringing learning to life!

This leadership development program integrates theory and practice to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and vision they need to build community, be effective citizens, and advocate for social justice.

By joining this program, Citizen Scholars make a set of commitments:

  • To grow as citizens, building their capacity to work in collaboration with others to build a more just society.
  • To grow as scholars, unleashing their imaginations and focusing their curiosity to discover the knowledge and the skills that will enable them to work effectively for change.
  • To be co-creators of a learning community that supports its members in their growth and their action.

Students who joined the program in 2010 or 2011 will complete the program as an Honors program, using Honors courses to fulfill Honors requirements.  The program is moving in 2012 under the new UMass Civic Engagement and Service-Learning office, becoming equally available to non-Honors and Honors students.  To learn more about the program for students who join in 2012 and beyond, please go to the CESL website.
