Scandinavian 387H: Viking Revival is a spring semester course that will explore Scandinavia's 19th-century revival of the Viking image as a modern nationalist idea. The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-11:15 a.m. The course will use literature, philopsophy, music, and the visual arts to trace the evolution of the Viking motif as an expression of Scandinavian romantic nationalism, and its unfortunate appropriation by German fascism in the 20th century. The class is taught in English by Prof. Sherrill Harbison. There are no prerequisites and the course fulfills the General Education literature (AL) requirement.
