KIN597W: ST: Wearable Technologies-Objective Monitoring of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior is a 3 credit (there is an option to audit), graduate level course which provides a thorough overview of using wearable technologies to objectively monitor physical activity and sedentary behavior in research and practice. Participants will learn through a combination of on-line discussion of assigned readings, residential expert lectures, peer interactions, and hands-on engagement with different types of wearable technologies focused on objectively monitoring physical activity and sedentary behavior. Wearable technologies are now widely used by researchers, practitioners and the lay public to a track a variety of free-living physical activity, sedentary behavior, and health parameters in real time. The market for fitness and health-related apps is large and growing. There will be continued need to expose students and researchers to these technologies and their possible applications. This course is designed to provide participants with theoretical and practical knowledge related to using wearable technologies as an objective way to monitor individuals’ physical activity and/or sedentary behavior in laboratory and free-living environments.
The 2018 summer institute is being offered in conjunction with the Kinesiology Physical Activity & Health Lab and will take place in Amherst from Monday June 25th through Friday June 29th. All interested participants must also complete the online portion of the institute. online portion runs from May 21st until Friday, July 6th, at which time the final project is due. online portion is hosted by the Office of Continuing and Professional Education and utilizes BlackBoard Learn. Access to the online portion of the institute will open on May 14th and participants will automatically have access to the course upon registration.
